6 ACTUALLY FUN & REALISTIC ideas for keeping your family entertained this summer

    • Jun 13, 2024
    • by Ruth Troughton

“MOOOOM I’M BORED”. Take a sigh of relief, because that’s the last time you’ll be hearing those words for a while. Here are six summer fun ideas to keep your kids, tweens, teenagers, or even grandparents entertained and make this season one to remember.

    1. Ninja Warrior Home Edition

Raise the stakes of summer fun by transforming your backyard into a Ninja Warrior obstacle course. We’re talking balance beams, tire runs, boxes to jump over, crawling under sheets… this ain’t for the faint-hearted. Time each other and prep a prize for the champion Ninja Warrior. Grandpa might have to sit this one out.

A person dressed in a homemade Spikeball-themed costume resembling a samurai or ninja warrior, with Spikeball equipment and packaging creatively attached to their body as armor, standing in front of wooden doors

Dressing up in Spikeball parts optional but strongly encouraged.

    2. DIY Movie Theater & Popcorn Accessorization (yep that's a word) Station

Let’s take it down a notch. I’m feeling tired after all that activity. Grab/borrow a projector and a screen (a white sheet works great) outside for an outdoor movie night, or turn your living room into a cozy theater with blankets & pillows. To spice things up, have a popcorn making sesh beforehand, where your kids can accessorize their popcorn with choc/candy/whatever the heart desires. (We didn’t say all our suggestions would be healthy.)

    3. Family Spikeball Tournament - The Ultimate Summer Fun Activity!

I’m not sure if you heard but Spikeball is the official sponsor of summer 2024... There aren’t many games that can get both little Jimmy and Great Aunt Dolores involved, but we’d like to bet that Spikeball is one of them. The exciting, dynamic game is perfect for all ages. Set up your Spikeball net in the backyard, at the beach, or in a park, and get ready for some action-packed, competitive-as-you-like, belly-laugh-inducing fun.

The rules are simple: each team gets up to three touches of the ball to return the ball to the net (think bump, set, spike). Except, unlike volleyball, Spikeball has no sides or boundaries! Once you start playing, it’s hard to stop.

New to Spikeball? Check out the Weekender Set for just $69.99 (or this promo!)- includes everything you need to get started on your Spikeball journey 🫡

A group of four people playing Spikeball in a backyard, with a woman reaching down to hit the ball while the others stand around the net ready to play. The group is barefoot, and the setting is a grassy yard with trees and a fence in the background.

    4. DIY Backyard Camping

Turn your backyard into a camping paradise. Set up a tent, roll out the sleeping bags, and enjoy a night under the stars without leaving home (no hole in the ground toilet required, PHEW). Plan a mini camping trip complete with a campfire (or a grill for the less adventurous amongst us), marshmallows for roasting, and ghost stories. Don’t forget Spikeball for daytime entertainment ;) Or chuck on Spikebrite (our light up accessory) for some serious night time fun - yep both the ball and the set light up! (PSA Spikebrite is compatible with the Pro and old standard sets)

Four people playing Spikeball at a campsite, with tents, hammocks, and a white Jeep in the background. The group is engaged in the game on a dirt surface, surrounded by trees.

    5. Cooking Challenge

Channel your inner chefs and have a cooking challenge at home. Pick a theme, like “International Cuisine” or “Dessert Extravaganza,” and let the kids take the lead (if you dare). Add friendly competition by taste testing and rating the creations.

A split image featuring two food items: on the left, a birthday cake designed like a Spikeball net with small balls on top and the words 'Happy Birthday Jacob' written on the base; on the right, a charcuterie board with grapes, crackers, and cheese, with a salami piece shaped like a mini table on top of cubed cheese

    6. Escape room

A personal favorite here at Spikeball HQ. Escape rooms are immersive, themed environments where you work together to solve puzzles, uncover clues, and complete your mission within a set time limit. Each room has a unique story and set of challenges, ranging from escaping a haunted mansion to solving a heist or defusing a bomb. There’s guaranteed to be one near you - just take to Google and get going.

Well, that’s it! We hope this sparked some new summer fun ideas for you and the fam.

Happy summer and spike on, fam!
